Common Clutch Problems

The clutch is made up of many parts that can have problems. Here are some of the parts we will inspect:

• Clutch disc: The clutch disc is the component that sits between the flywheel and the pressure plate and provides the friction necessary to transmit power from the engine to the transmission. A worn clutch disc will not provide enough friction to fully engage the gears, which can make shifting difficult or impossible. A worn clutch disc can also cause the gears to grind or slip.
• Pressure plate: The pressure plate is the component that applies pressure to the clutch disc to engage the gears. A worn or damaged pressure plate will not apply enough pressure to fully engage the gears, which can cause slipping or grinding.
• Release bearing: The release bearing is responsible for pushing the pressure plate away from the clutch disc to disengage the gears. When the bearing wears out or is damaged, it can cause a grinding or whining noise when the clutch is disengaged.
• Flywheel: The flywheel is a heavy metal disc that sits behind the clutch and provides a smooth surface for the clutch to press against. A worn flywheel can cause the gears to grind or slip, and it can also cause vibration and noise when the clutch is engaged.
